Toronto Comedy Brawl Semi-Finals are announced
Today I received my date for the Toronto Comedy Brawl semi-final – Tuesday 24th August. I’m excited and nervous – the line-up is superb: Sam Feldman, Jamie O’Connor, Julie Kim, K Trevor Wilson, Chris Wakelin, Ian MacIntyre and Veronika Swartz. Most of the other comics are friends so it will be a really fun night, but the competition is fierce. Here are the details of the gig: Tuesday August 24th at 8.00pm at the Crown and Tiger pub (College and Bathurst). For $5 you get...

Hooray! This week’s gig is at my favourite room in Toronto – Spirits in Toronto’s gay village. The delicious Jo-Anna Downey is the hostess with the mostess and Toronto’s best comedians and out-of-towners flock to perform at this great pub. Here are the deets: 9pm at Spirits – 682 Church Street at Bloor, Toronto. I often come to Spirits even when I’m not performing – and I don’t really do that at many rooms in the city – that’s how...

I’m a little bit over-excited. That’s because I’ve been invited to appear at my very first comedy festival as a newcomer. Woot! The festival consists of two nights of comedy – on Friday 24th September is the Rising Star Showcase with 14 comedians competing for a spot on the Gala Event on the Saturday night. Guest judges are the MC for the Gala Event Gavin Stephens, Mike Hancock (the mayor of Brantford), Dave Levac (MPP for Brant and Chief Government Whip) and Len Offless...

Where better to be on a Tuesday night than on the Danforth? The Eton House is one of my favourite rooms to play in Toronto. Hosted by top bird Jo-Anna Downey it has a great bunch of locals who support the free Tuesday night comedy. And there are some real characters among the locals including the infamous Chicken Legs. What’s not to like? Here are the deets: 9pm at Eton House, 710 the Danforth (1 block east of Pape). Hope to see you...

Tomorrow night I compete to go through to the semi-finals of the Toronto Comedy Brawl. It’s a tough group of comics I’m up against – Laura Salvas, my StandUp Sister, Ryan Maglunob, Claire Stollery, Jenny Serwylo (who won her qualifying round which I MC’d), Tyler Brent, Cliff Myers and my friend Adrian Sawyer. I would love to progress to the semi-finals – if you’re able to come out and support me please come to the Crown and Tiger Pub, 414 College Street West...

When I went back to England a few weeks ago I discovered a fabulous new comedy series – Mock the Week. A topical, improvised news show with stand-up comedians and impressionists, Mock the Week is one of the things that makes me wish I still had access to British television. Some of you may know that I do a joke about GPS units (or Sat Navs) in cars (click here to see it – it’s in the Absolute Comedy set and comes right after my charity muggers joke) that actually helped me...

Marilla Wex – angry comic. Tomorrow (Thursday) I will be appearing at Plum 226 Restaurant and Lounge. It’s quite posh. I’m quite excited. The show starts at 8pm and the cover is $10 – this includes a complementary drink! Can’t say fairer than that. So come down to 226 Carlton (at Parliament) at 8pm for some great pre-pride comedy. There will be gays. There will be straights. There will be bothies. It will be...

Last night was my first round show in this year’s Toronto Comedy Brawl. I must admit that I was feeling a bit ambivalent about it until I had a fantastic brand new set at Best of the West End Girls on Saturday night. It’s been a while since I’ve had a rocking 6-7 minutes that I really like so I was excited to be going into the competition with something that I feel can stand up to “Charity Muggers” and “GPS” – the set that won me third place last...
