The Railway Children wins the Audience Choice Award at the Doras

We were all dressed to the nines and excited as hell.

The Railway Children was nominated for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Set Design, Outstanding Costume Design, Outstanding Lighting Design and Outstanding Original Sound Design/Composition in the General Theatre Division. The production was also nominated for the Audience Choice Award, sponsored by NOW Magazine and Yonge-Dundas Square.

The evening was much more fun than we’d anticipated – the girls all brought hip flasks we’d bought at Urban Outfitters, but they weren’t needed. The beer was cheap and drinkable in the theatre and we’d stopped at the Irish Embassy for cocktails beforehand. 

Craig Lauzon and Michaela Washburn were hilarious hosts, but the night was stolen by Gordon Pinsent who did a take on his Justin Bieber reading (see below) by reading some of the worst reviews of the year. The crowd actually booed when Richard Ouzounian’s name was mentioned. We joined in…

When the Audience Choice Award came up we all held our breath. When the presenter was about to announce the winner and mentioned a train we all looked at each other. We had won!

Rob Richardson, the producer from Marquis Entertainment, accepted the award on behalf of the company. We all appreciated the fact that he played down the importance of Vicky the Train, and emphasized the wonderful ensemble of actors that made the show worth seeing.

There was more drinking and fabulous food after the awards. Some of us ended up back at the Irish Embassy. It was my first awards ceremony and I hope not my last!
