Last night was my first round show in this year’s Toronto Comedy Brawl.
I must admit that I was feeling a bit ambivalent about it until I had a fantastic brand new set at Best of the West End Girls on Saturday night. It’s been a while since I’ve had a rocking 6-7 minutes that I really like so I was excited to be going into the competition with something that I feel can stand up to “Charity Muggers” and “GPS” – the set that won me third place last year.
I was a bit slack inviting people to the first round, but very lucky that a great friend of mine, Brenda Belkin, came with a friend. The line-up was really strong: Veronica Swartz, Andrew Ivimey, Kristian Reimer, Alan Kliffer, Paul Settle, Alex Pavone, Jillian Thomas, Peter Fulton and Miriam Verburg.
I must admit I wasn’t at all sure I would progress in the competition. The audience was fairly quiet throughout and host Julia Bruce had quite a hard time. I was the penultimate act and felt that the set went well, but had no idea how the audience would vote.
After a tense twenty to thirty minutes Julia announced the results – I just scraped through to the second round by the skin of my teeth! I was fourth out of four to advance to round two. Phew! Must invite more friends next time……
