Tweeting in verse

A couple of years ago I asked my husband to buy me a book.

I’m a big fan of Stephen Fry and had seen his book The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet Within. Like a good husband he bought it for me and I promptly ignored it for many months.

Then in the days running up to the monthly artists’ salon I attend (run by the delicious Inge Christensen) I suddenly felt the urge to write some poetry and I remembered the book I’d wanted so badly and never read. So yesterday afternoon I began to read it and thought what a hoot it would be as a writing exercise to tweet only in iambic pentameter for a week.

So that’s what I’m doing. You can follow my tweets here and see if I manage to get in any enjambments, trochaic substitutions and feminine endings. I thoroughly recommend Mr. Fry’s book for anyone who’s felt the need to write poetry but hasn’t known where to start – he explains everything so beautifully whilst making you laugh like a demented gibbon. Which is just about everything I love in a writer (just like my husband). For your own copy of the book, click on the link below (the link on the left is for Canadians and Americans, the one on the right is for the Brits). Enjoy!
