Toronto Comedy Brawl Final
Aug 19
Last night the final of the Toronto Comedy Brawl was held at the Comedy Hole.
Out of 64 comedians, just eight remained. The venue was filled to capacity – standing room only and the comics stood on the stairwells. Jason Blanchard did a tremendous job of hosting. The audience was receptive and ready to laugh. The atmosphere was electric.
I drew the last spot which I was really happy about. I came in and out of the packed basement to listen to each comic’s set and watched Dave Merheje from the side of the stage – he was up before me. I was excited and a little nervous – I’d reworked my set a little to pull some of the strongest elements together in a new way. Although I’d rehearsed it enough, there was still that small element of fear that I’d cock it up.
My set went really well – the audience response was tremendous – I really don’t think I could have done better. Then the waiting began while the voting ballots were counted….Ian Atlas actually ran out of ballots because there were so many people at the event. He had to send a couple of comics who weren’t competing out to the 7/11 to photocopy more.
In the end I placed third behind Ian Lynch and Dave Merheje. It was a very closely run contest and I’m really proud of myself that I made it to the finals after having done stand-up for less than a year. A big thank you to Ian Atlas for organizing the event and congratulations to all the comics in the final – Laura Salvas, Will O’Neill, K. Trevor Wilson, Pat McDonald and Joel Buxton. And thanks to all my lovely friends that came out. What a night!
