It’s always lovely to get a part in a play. It’s even lovelier when you get asked to be in a show without auditioning.
And that’s just what happened to me yesterday. I got a phone call from my old friend Heather Davies – a Canadian who was my first roommate when I left the Bristol Old Vic theatre school and moved to London. A great actress and amazing singer, Heather transitioned into theatre and opera directing, working at the Royal Shakespeare Company in England before coming back to Toronto to complete her masters at York.
She’d messaged me on Facebook a few weeks ago asking what I was doing mid-July to mid-August and I told her that apart from competing in the Toronto Comedy Brawl I was pretty much free. I then promptly forgot all about the message.
Heather has adapted three short stories from the award-winning collection Toronto Noir into an hour-long theatre play which has been chosen as one of the pieces included in the Summer Works Theatre Festival in Toronto. My role is Karen from “A Taste of Honey” by Kim Moritsugu, a Japanese French Canadian author.
I am hugely flattered and jolly excited to be asked to be in Heather’s show. It’s been nine years since I’ve done any theatre and it will be lovely to work with an old friend. To find out more about the show go to this page of the Summer Works website. If you would like to come and see the show go to my Upcoming Appearances page for the full list of dates and times of the shows.
