Having a Blast at Yuk Yuk’s
May 13
Last night was my first time at Yuk Yuk’s. I had a blast.
Tuesday night is amateur night at Yuk’s and I’ve been meaning to do it for a long time. Back in February I foolishly triple-booked myself at the Comedy Hole, the Eton House and Yuk Yuk’s. Since the Comedy Hole and the Eton House came first, I ended up blowing Yuk Yuk’s out. Some people said I should have done Yuk’s, but I didn’t want to let down Ian Atlas or Jo-Anna Downey. And Jess at Yuk’s was really nice about it – she clearly didn’t hold it against me since yesterday morning was the first time I had called back to sign up for the show.
I had never been to Yuk Yuk’s before and showed up during the Students from Humber College School of Comedy show (which goes on at 7.30pm before the general amateur show at 9.30pm). My friend David Andrew Brent came in behind me, swiftly followed by Joy Acharjee, who was on the show with me. My comedy mentor Andrea Mitchell was waiting for me. I checked in with Jess the booker and Joy, Andrea and I got a table.
There were thirteen comics on the bill and Paul Smith was the host. I was up tenth and didn’t feel too nervous. The guy before me did a take-off of a British newsreader which gave me a cute opener to my set – “I’m not putting on an accent, Kevin, I’m actually English……..wanker……..”. Got a nice laugh.
Did my regular 5-6 minute set and it went well. Paul Smith had a fun comment about one of my jokes afterwards, which I always figure is a good thing – at least it was memorable.
Jon Dore was the headliner and I really liked his act – I didn’t know what to expect, since he has a tv show but I’ve never seen him do stand-up. He was quirky and surreal and a great end to the night.
Joy (who also had a great set) and I celebrated with pintage at the Elephant and Castle. A great night. I look forward to playing there again with my next set.
