A couple of weeks ago I sat down with almost the entire cast of Ninjamaica to see the finished pilot at the offices of Lenz Entertainment. We were all completely blown away.
And it takes a lot to impress comedians. We loved it so much we all stayed to watch it again when Kevin Herod, who plays Ninjamaica, arrived late. Kenny Robinson, who was unable to make the screening because of a previous gig commitment at the army base in Trenton, was fantastic as the bad guy – it looked like the artists had based the character on him – the resemblance was hilarious.
Zabrina Chevannes, a friend of mine from the Toronto comedy circuit, was also in it – a lovely surprise for me, since we all recorded our stuff individually – I had no idea she had taken part. Afterwards on Facebook we shared our amazement at how incredible the finished article was – neither of us had known what to expect and were entirely astonished at how fabulous it was.
With vibrant colours and a style unlike anything any of us have ever seen, and fantastic music to boot, Ninjamaica entertained, amused and thrilled us all. The theme tune is hilarious and very catchy and we immediately all thought: “Ringtone!”
The good news is that Teletoons themselves are shopping the pilot around and it’s being promoted both in the US and Europe. Lenz Entertainment are extremely excited and if the show gets picked up, are thinking of setting up “One Tree Hill”-style live tours with stand-up and music. There was even talk of merchandising. I’d like to see a Kay Cockburn doll on a scooter……
I’m keeping everything crossed without pinning my hopes on this. Cartoon work is my ideal job and if this show makes it I’ll be beside myself. Watch this space – with any luck we’ll be recording a season in June….
