Trying to be Eddie Izzard
Aug 03
I think I’m trying to be too clever. You see, I’m always impressed by comedians who weave stories in and out of other stories and bring back themes or gags that you haven’t thought about in a few minutes to get a second or third laugh. I don’t know if I’ve expressed that very clearly, but if you watch Eddie Izzard you’ll know what I mean.
I’ve got some themes I’d like to explore in my stand-up act and I want to try and integrate them so that quite a few of them link up and feed on each other. The problem is structuring the set.
When you read a previous post of mine, Why Testing Your Material Rocks , you’ll understand why I’m so damned glad to have a bunch of like-minded loons who are all trying to write their own material ready at hand to help me guage whether any of it is funny or makes sense. If I can get some sense of what’s working then I can worry about the structuring later – just write the gags along various themes and see if they go over.
I think I’m just panicking a bit because I’ve got the filming coming up and I want to have everything building into a nice, smart little routine. This Thursday marks the half-way point of my course with Dawn Whitwell and I’m sweating a little. I don’t feel like I’ve got nearly enough material.
My trouble is, I always want to run before I can walk.
