Today I did my cartoon gig – it was amazing! What a hoot – my main character, as I discussed yesterday, is the British manager of a Jamaican band who may or may not be some kind of secret agent.
I also played a German tourist having sex with a Jamaican guy, and a Japanese pop singer who’s most definitely also a secret agent and is trying to kill the main character. This was perhaps the most fun part since it involved me having to record a bunch of fighting noises that I imagined a Japanese martial arts trained manga-type character would make. Since I don’t win the fight in the cartoon I also had to make the noises of having my ass kicked.
I love the industry I work in – especially studio work. There’s something very satisfying about creating something with just your voice – doing six or seven different versions of the same line so that the director, animators and editor will have a lot to play with to create the cartoon. And the fact that you don’t have to get dressed up. I remember going to the BBC in London once to meet a friend for lunch and hearing the voice of a famous radio newsreader behind me. “Oh my God, it’s Brian Perkins!” I turned around and saw a guy who looked like an old hobo. I’d always imagined him sitting in a tuxedo in the studio. Instead he was wearing a moth-eaten cardigan and carpet slippers.
What a great business.
