Dawn was right about the notebook…

Last night I was so jazzed after Dawn Whitwell‘s stand-up class that I couldn’t sleep. That was after telling my husband that I had no energy for smooching because I’d been running around like a blue-arsed fly all day (cartoon voice-over, audition for an HBC Rewards commercial, stand-up class). So I lay there having all kinds of wonderful ideas for routines.

All kinds of wonderful ideas that I can’t remember now, dammit.

I’ve heard many people explain how they keep a notebook and pen on their nightstand so that they can record all the “eureka moment” ideas they have when dropping off to sleep, but I’ve never been able to manage it. I don’t want to disturb my husband by turning the light on and off, even if I could make my limbs move to do that and grab my notebook. It’s happened a few times now that I’ve woken up in the morning with my first thought being “What was that great idea I had last night…” followed by “Oh shit, it’s completely gone.” If I could gather up the energy to write them down at least I could take a look at them in the cold light of day and decide whether or not they sucked ass.

However, I had more success whilst at lunch with my friend Romy, another Brit, and an ex-tv producer girlfriend. A couple of times during our conversation I wrote down things I wanted to develop as ideas (Christian knitting, nude yachting, Jewish tourettes syndrome). Luckily she’s quite used to eccentric performer behaviour and said nothing – it was either that or her upper middle class Britishness getting in the way of asking what the bloody hell I was writing notes on while she was talking.

From now on bugger the old man – I’m turning the light on.
